These photographs were taken during a visit to the Taramaire Wildlife Refuge Reserve near Miranda in the Waikato by the Firth of Thames. At the time of year visited its possible to see many migrant birds preparing for their return journey. Some of them, such as the Oystercatchers come from the South Island, while others like the Bar-tailed Godwits come from as far away as the Arctic. 
The three species flocking together are the Poaka Pied Stilt in the background, Kuaka Bar-tailed Godwit in the middle ground, and the Torea Pied Oystercatcher in the foreground
